Course Outline Overview: What lessons can you learn from a guy who practices in a van down by the river? Plenty! During this course attendees will be introduced to the functional neurology of particular importance to the pregnant and postpartum population, the neurological concepts of polyvagal theory (Stephen Porges), and a unique assessment for assessing fascial tone in the third trimester. Attendees will gain practical experience for addressing Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders through the chiropractic lens and heart rate variability (HRV) monitoring. These will be applied to build a hypothesis on developing intuition during the pregnancy period and chiropractic’s role in modulating that sense. One factor that disrupts the polyvagal ladder is trauma, and we will explore the impact of a natural disaster on the neurology of pregnant women and the children who survive it. Hour 1: Introduction to objectively measuring cortical function, autonomic nervous system indicators and balance for perinatal patients. Hour 2: Utilizing the information from the functional outcome assessment, targeting adjustments and activities to screen for PMADs, and manage this common condition of the perinatal phase. Hour 3: Instruction and hands on experience with the UT Angle for estimating angle of abdominal engagement. Hour 4: A polyvagal approach to improve neurological flexibility and resilience during pregnancy. Speaker Bio: John “Doc” Edwards, DC, DACCP is blessed with the mission to help perinatal chiropractors cut decades off the process of clinical mastery. After losing 3 offices to Hurricane Ian in 2022, he became a model of adaptability and resilience by literally reforming his practice in a van down by the river. He is a clinical researcher and has been the Advanced Perinatal Clinical Practice instructor for the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association since 2017. His wife Danielle and their 4 children enjoy theme parks, traveling, Jeepin’ and time on the water. |
